FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Pediatric Dental FAQs

We are experts in pediatric dentistry, dedicated to providing specialized care for infants, children, and adolescents. Here, you’ll discover responses to commonly asked questions regarding optimal dental care for kids.

We advise scheduling your child’s first dental appointment as soon as their first tooth emerges. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you should take them to the dentist within six months of their first tooth coming in or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.

All dental specialists, including pediatric dentists and orthodontists, and others, start their journey by completing dental school, followed by several years of specialized training. Pediatric dentists have undergone specific training and acquired comprehensive expertise in dental care for infants, children, and adolescents. They have a passion for working with young, growing smiles and are experts in dental development. Our office is specifically tailored to cater to young visitors, ensuring a warm and inviting environment through our team, office design, and decorations, and our activities are aimed at providing a friendly and comfortable experience for children.

Typically, the initial visit is brief and straightforward. Our primary focus is for our team to get to know your child and provide you with essential information regarding dental care. One of our friendly pediatric dentists will assess your child’s teeth for alignment and health, examining their gums and jaw for any potential issues. If needed, a gentle cleaning may be performed. Additionally, we’ll address any concerns or questions you have about nurturing your child’s dental health as they grow.

A child should typically visit the dentist for routine check-ups every six months. These regular appointments help monitor their dental development, address any emerging issues early on, and ensure optimal oral health. However, the number of visits may vary depending on your child’s individual needs.

Orthodontic FAQs

As experts in orthodontics, we offer thorough treatment for those aiming to straighten their teeth and enhance their bite. Here, you’ll discover responses to frequently asked questions about orthodontic treatments and the path to achieving a more aligned and healthier smile.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends your child first visit an orthodontist for their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7 or when you or your dentist first notice a potential orthodontic problem. It’s important to point out that orthodontic treatment extends beyond children and teenagers! In fact, approximately one in every five orthodontic patients are over the age of 21. Whether you’re contemplating treatment for yourself or for a child, now is the time to get started on your smile journey.

Braces may cause some discomfort initially and during adjustments, as the teeth and mouth adjust to the pressure exerted by the braces. However, this discomfort is usually mild and temporary and can be managed by taking over-the-counter pain medication. Additionally, your orthodontist may recommend using wax to help with irritation. In general, any discomfort experienced during orthodontic treatment tends to decrease as the mouth adapts, and the end result, a straighter smile, often outweighs any temporary discomfort.

The length of your orthodontic treatment varies depending on several factors such as the type of orthodontic issues, the kind of braces used, and how well you follow along with your orthodontist’s instructions. Generally, braces are worn for one to three years, but it can be shorter or longer based on your specific situation. Your orthodontist will provide you with a personalized treatment plan and an estimated timeline for your orthodontic treatment.

While playing an instrument or sports might take some getting used to with braces, they won’t stop your involvement in those activities. For contact sports, we do recommend you wear a mouthguard to safeguard your braces or other orthodontic appliances from accidents or injuries.

Pediatric Tongue-Tie Center FAQs

Nothing is more important than your child’s health and well-being, and hearing that your child will need a frenectomy procedure may sound intimidating. We are here to reassure you by answering some frequently asked questions about laser frenectomy procedures in Raleigh and Garner.

Signs and symptoms in babies include breastfeeding or latching difficulties, trouble gaining weight, fussiness and gassiness and more, while signs in toddlers include slow eating, restless sleeping and snoring and speech troubles and delays.

After the procedure, your child may experience some slight discomfort, which can be managed with Tylenol. Dr. Kornstein and our team will also provide specific aftercare instructions to encourage proper healing, including guidelines for stretches.

We may give some small children nitrous oxide to help them relax and stay calm, but many children may not need any sedation.

You can expect high-quality and expert care from Dr. Kornstein and his team. He received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of North Carolina and a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry Baltimore College of Dental Surgery/University of Maryland Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kornstein has performed countless successful tongue-tie and lip tie releases and has the glowing reviews to prove it!
