The Benefits Of Adult Orthodontic Treatment

Pictures mark precious moments in our lives–from college graduation to weddings, family gatherings and so much more. For some adults, these pictures can be difficult to look back at if they do not love their smile and are looking for a change. At Wake Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, we want to help you achieve a beautiful, healthy smile at any time in your life! Thanks to innovative technology and robust methods in orthodontics, braces are not what they used to be. Nowadays, they are more sleek, convenient and less noticeable than ever before. Here are some of the benefits braces produce:

It’s no secret that when you look good, you feel good too! Most of our patients are elated after finishing up their orthodontic treatment and look forward to flashing their new smiles on a daily basis.

According to a recent report, about 65% of adults have some type of malocclusion, or bite problem. We evaluate this by looking at how your upper and bottom teeth come together when you close your mouth. An irregular bite can cause several problems including: chewing, speaking or even breathing. Fortunately, braces can help remedy this problem and restore your bite function.

Crooked or teeth that are misaligned are more difficult to clean, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. In fact, one in four adults are living with at least one cavity, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Straighter teeth are known to decrease the risk of periodontal or gum disease.

One of the advantages of the most recent advancements in orthodontic appliances is shorter treatment time. Previously, attaining your desired results through braces may take anywhere from 18 to 36 months. However, now we see many cases finishing up as quickly as 12 months!

Treatment Options

At Wake Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, we are happy to offer several different options for our adult patients looking to improve their smile! Our team works with you to assess your situation and discuss which route is best for you and your lifestyle.

Traditional metal braces are still a common choice for people of all ages, including adults! They are durable and extremely effective when it comes to handling both simple and complex cases. Progression in today’s braces have made the brackets smaller and even more comfortable. Additionally, if you need elastic bands to help with overcrowding or jaw alignment, we have a variety of colors to choose from that express our patients’ unique personalities!

Our ceramic braces are similar to that of traditional ones, but differ in their appearance. The brackets are made of a clear, porcelain material, so they blend in with your natural teeth. This option is very appealing to our patients who are hoping to work towards a straighter smile in a more discreet way.

These clear aligners are a beloved choice for our patients due to their nearly invisible appearance and ability to take them out when necessary. Invisalign® trays are custom-made for you after one of our orthodontists takes impressions of your teeth and prescribes a personalized treatment plan. This means you will have fewer in-office appointments since there isn’t a need for tightenings that comes with traditional braces. The one thing to remember is that you must be resilient at wearing them consistently to get your dream results in a timely fashion!

This self-ligating bracket system uses a unique clip mechanism to seamlessly move the brackets instead of using a series of elastic ties. In-Ovation allows for less friction and greater comfort compared to traditional or ceramic braces. Some other benefits include: easier to clean, less adjustments and shorter office visits!

Invisalign®

The Invisalign® system merges cutting-edge 3-D technology with the century-old principles of orthodontics. Crafted to gradually shift your teeth to their ideal alignment, these clear aligners are meticulously calibrated and tailored to fit your mouth at every phase of treatment.

Discover the path to achieving the stunningly straight smile you’ve dreamed of, all without the need for braces. Request a complimentary consultation today to explore whether Invisalign®  is the perfect fit for you.

Why should you consider orthodontic treatment?

Our practice also recognizes that adults and children have different needs, and require a different level of attention and care. We will work with you to ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatments and that your needs are met with understanding and respect from us.

Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to keep clean with flossing and brushing, and may help prevent other health problems.

Orthodontic treatment can help boost your self-confidence, giving you a better quality of life and the freedom to smile without holding back!

Not receiving orthodontic treatment when it’s needed can create long-term health issues costing you more in the end.

The difference between adult orthodontics and orthodontics for children and teens:

The main difference to remember when treating adults, teens or children is that in younger patients the jawbones are still developing. For adults, these bones have stopped growing which may mean the possibility of orthognathic surgery to align the jawbones.

Other differences include:

Adults are more likely than children to experience gum recession or even bone loss due to gingivitis or advanced periodontal disease. Patients with straighter teeth are less likely to get gum disease.

Over time teeth can become worn down and shift into different positions that can only be corrected with orthodontic care. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to shift and tilt, creating a bad bite and increasing the possibility of gum disease.

Many adults received some orthodontic treatment as a child or teen but never completed their treatment. As an adult, they choose to complete their orthodontic treatment to achieve the healthy, beautiful smile they always wanted.
