FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

All dental specialists, including pediatric dentists, orthodontists, oral surgeons, and others, start their journey by completing dental school, followed by several years of specialized training. Pediatric dentists have undergone specific training and acquired comprehensive expertise in dental care for infants, children, and adolescents. They have a passion for working with young, growing smiles and are experts in dental development. Our office is specifically tailored to cater to young visitors, ensuring a warm and inviting environment through our team, office design, and decorations, and our activities are aimed at providing a friendly and comfortable experience for children.

We advise scheduling your child’s first dental appointment as soon as their first tooth emerges. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you should take them to the dentist within six months of their first tooth coming in or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.

Orthodontic treatment can be beneficial at any age, but it is typically recommended to have an initial orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. This allows the orthodontist to identify any potential issues and determine the most appropriate timing for treatment. However, orthodontic treatment can also be effective for adults, and there is no upper age limit for seeking orthodontic care.

The duration of orthodontic treatment can vary depending on the complexity of the case and the individual’s response to treatment. On average, orthodontic treatment typically lasts between one to three years. Regular adjustments and visits to the orthodontist are necessary to ensure the progress and effectiveness of the treatment plan.

Early orthodontic treatment, also known as interceptive orthodontics or Phase I treatment, refers to orthodontic intervention performed on children at a younger age, typically between the ages of 7 and 10. The goal of early orthodontic treatment is to address specific dental and skeletal issues in order to guide the growth and development of the jaw and teeth and to create a more favorable environment for the eruption of permanent teeth.

“Both my brother and I got braces at Wake Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry by Dr. Collie. The office has a cool surfing vibe, and all the people who work there are nice and friendly. Our teeth look great. Dr. Collie was always fun to talk to about school and sports. My mom now sees Dr. McCutchen for Invisalign. We love seeing my mom’s new smile!”
