This year’s theme is “Water, Nature’s Drink.” Choosing water over a sugary beverage is great way to give your child’s teeth and oral health a boost while supporting lifelong healthy habits.
Even before children get their first tooth, the mouth and gums should be wiped with a soft, damp cloth or infant toothbrush after feedings. This will help establish a good oral hygiene routine early which will bring lifelong benefits. All baby teeth should be brushed gently with a soft, child-sized toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride-free toothpaste twice a day until age 2. A small, pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing fluoride should be used from ages 2 to 6.
Did you know tooth decay is the number one most common chronic childhood disease? Here are some tips to help your child avoid tooth decay and maintain their healthiest smile:
- Establish proper brushing and flossing techniques early, and as a parent, be diligent in caring for your baby’s or toddler’s teeth.
- Brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush after each feeding or meal to optimize your child’s oral health.
- Visit the dentist by your child’s first birthday to learn proper cleaning methods and to establish a relationship with an oral health care provider that will continue throughout childhood.
- Choose healthy foods and limit sugary treats and drinks.
