Start Early
Good oral habits start in infancy. Even before your child’s first tooth emerges, gently wipe their gums with a clean, damp cloth after feedings. Once your child’s first tooth emerges, typically around six months old, start brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. Starting early helps children become accustomed to the routine of oral care from the beginning.
Lead by Example
Kids learn by watching and copying their parents’ actions. Make brushing and flossing a family affair by brushing your teeth together in the morning and before bedtime. Show your children that oral habits are an essential part of your daily routine, and they will be more likely to follow suit.
Make It Fun
Turn toothbrushing into a game or a challenge to make it more enjoyable for your kids. Let them pick out their toothbrush and toothpaste with fun characters or flavors. Sing songs, tell stories, or set a timer for two minutes to make brushing feel like less of a chore and more like a fun activity.
Reward Good Behavior
Positive reinforcement goes a long way in encouraging children to develop healthy oral habits. Create a reward system where your child earns stickers or small prizes for brushing their teeth without fuss or remembering to floss every day for a week. Celebrate their achievements and praise their efforts to reinforce the importance of good oral habits.
Schedule Regular Dental Visits to Create Oral Habits
Regular dental appointments are essential for preserving your child’s oral well-being. Schedule their first dental appointment by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth eruption. Routine visits allow our pediatric dentists to monitor your child’s dental development, provide preventive care and address any concerns early on.
