Even as adults, we can admit that learning is way more fun when it’s interactive and engaging! As parents, you all have the awesome job of teaching your kiddos about the importance of good dental hygiene. Don’t worry – we won’t make you do this alone! Our dental team will educate your children when you bring them in for their regular dental visits. In this blog, we want to share our favorite tips on explaining dental hygiene to your young kids so that they (and you!) have a fun time learning and staying healthy.Â
Dental Hygiene: Use Playful Language
Young children respond well to play and imaginative storytelling. Use fun language and exaggerated expressions to describe the process of brushing and flossing. For example, you can describe brushing as “painting the teeth with toothpaste.”
Show and Tell
Demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques while explaining what you’re doing. You can also use a stuffed animal or doll to help demonstrate the process. Using visual aids helps your child stay more engaged. For older kids, you can show them pictures or videos of healthy teeth and gums, as well as pictures of cavities and gum disease. There are plenty of kid-friendly graphics online that can help you explain the anatomy of the tooth and what a cavity is. This will help them understand the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene.
Make a Routine
Establish a routine of brushing and flossing twice a day and make it part of your child’s daily routine. Let them pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste so they feel some ownership of their dental health. You can probably find a toothbrush or toothpaste with your kid’s favorite cartoon character on it!
Focus on a Few Key Questions
You don’t need to cram everything into one lesson! You can teach them new things gradually over time as they grow older. When they’re young, focus on just a few key questions, such as:
- Why are your teeth important?
- How can you take care of your teeth?
- What is a dentist, and why are they important?
