Children's dental health month Every February the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month. The goal is to educate children and to remind parents of the value of good oral health. At Wake Pediatric Dentistry, we are passionate about this effort and we want to do our part in educating the community!

This year’s theme is “Water, Nature’s Drink.” Choosing water over a sugary beverage is great way to give your child’s teeth and oral health a boost while supporting lifelong healthy habits.

Even before children get their first tooth, the mouth and gums should be wiped with a soft, damp cloth or infant toothbrush after feedings. This will help establish a good oral hygiene routine early which will bring lifelong benefits. All baby teeth should be brushed gently with a soft, child-sized toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride-free toothpaste twice a day until age 2. A small, pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing fluoride should be used from ages 2 to 6.

Did you know tooth decay is the number one most common chronic childhood disease? Here are some tips to help your child avoid tooth decay and maintain their healthiest smile:

  • Establish proper brushing and flossing techniques early, and as a parent, be diligent in caring for your baby’s or toddler’s teeth.
  • Brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush after each feeding or meal to optimize your child’s oral health.
  • Visit the dentist by your child’s first birthday to learn proper cleaning methods and to establish a relationship with an oral health care provider that will continue throughout childhood.
  • Choose healthy foods and limit sugary treats and drinks.
