5 desserts for braces that are safe to eat Braces certainly affect what you can and cannot eat, and desserts are no exception. Eating the wrong type of food can damage not only your braces, but your teeth as well. Fortunately, we’ve come up with five types of desserts that won’t break your braces!

Cake

No, the cake is not a lie. Cake is a great dessert for those with braces because it’s so soft and fluffy. Be careful not to eat cake that has anything too sticky or chewy accompanying it, such as frosting or gummies baked in.

Pudding/Jello/Etc.

As you may expect, pudding is an easy dessert to eat with braces due to its liquidy nature. Custard is also a good option, as is jello and other similar desserts that are neither solid nor liquid.

Fruit

Yes, fruit is considered a desert, and what a delectable dessert it can be! Top with cream or simply eat by itself, fruit is a healthy alternative to other sweet treats, and the best part is it’s still delicious! (See also: Fruit smoothies.) Of course, you may want to consider avoiding hard fruit like note-yet-ripe pears. At the least, cut up hard fruit into smaller, bite-sized pieces.

Ice Cream

Ice cream is soft and melts in your mouth, making this a fantastic dessert to feed your braces. Again, there are things to be wary of, including ice cream with chunks of chocolate, candy, or other hard foods mixed in.

(Soft) Cookies

Sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and snickerdoodles are all great desserts–if they’re soft. If topping a sugar cookie with more sweetness, use frosting and do not use sprinkles. Keep nuts out of your chocolate chip cookies (for your braces, yes, but also because you’re not a monster). You’ll also want to be sure you don’t over bake them, so maybe break one in half before eating it to see if it’s too hard for your teeth.

In general, avoid foods that are chewy, crunchy, hard, and sticky. While that may eliminate a lot of your favorites, don’t despair, because the above desserts are great, braces or not! Do keep in mind that all desserts should be eaten in moderation, not only for your braces, but for your teeth and overall health as well.
