guidelines for toothbrush care Raleigh NC pediatric dentistAt Wake Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, we believe establishing a daily dental routine with your little one is a great way to get them on the path to optimal oral health. In addition to encouraging healthy habits, it’s also important to make sure your child’s toothbrush is in good condition. Here are a few guidelines to go by and recommendations for when it’s time to replace.

Proper Toothbrush Care

We offer the following recommendations to maintaining your child’s toothbrush:

  • Thoroughly rinse after every use and shake off excess water. Allowing the toothbrush to fully dry between uses will help reduce the growth of bacteria.
  • Store toothbrushes in an upright position. To avoid spreading germs store toothbrushes individually, so they aren’t touching.
  • If sickness occurs, sanitize your child’s toothbrush in mouthwash overnight, or dip into boiling water for a few seconds.
  • Most kids don’t like sharing, and for proper dental hygiene it’s best that every family member have their own toothbrush.

Time to Replace

According to the American Dental Association (ADA) toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. The ADA also mentions that children’s toothbrushes may need to be replaced more frequently. The key indicator are the bristles. If you notice fraying bristles, then it’s time to get a new one.

When it’s time to replace, include your children during your shopping trip. He or she will enjoy the excitement and responsibility of choosing a new toothbrush.
